(Note this is my first fanfiction and I am open to any suggestions so that I can improve the next sections, more sections will be posted as I write them. Thank you.)
It has been ten years after ZV day was declared in the United States of America, some say this history is too soon, some say too late, though I believe that it has to be written sometime, and why not now. I must explain, two years ago the World Assembly gave me practically unlimited resources, at least by the standards set forth today. I could travel freely, even to recluse nations like the Cuban Hegemony, Holy Zepplien Empire, or People's Republic of Gerelden. I had access to a tablet computer, which someone who was before the war might not understand as such a luxury, given how few work now after the war. During the two years I went around the world and gathered statistics, stories, accounts, memoirs passed along from those who were not left. I compiled this data into my WA report, however they asked me to remove 'the human element' and resubmit my report. As such I edited my notes, and submitted my facts and figures to the WA, while keeping the human story to myself. A friend approached me and suggested I write for civilians, telling the Human story before the WA took away my notes. As such the following is the most complete version I can present with WA approval.
New Atlantica, Capital lf the Holy Zepplien Empire
I stand looking over the ruined city, with an middle age woman in a dusty old wool coat. We sit on a snowy bench, watching the reconstruction. She looks at me "They say Zepplien, or the Hegemony as we were known back then, should have survived the zombie war and thrived. All those news reporters and coffee shop revolutionaries were not here in the thick of it, watching what happened, those Capit-" she pauses and corrects herself "Heretics dishonour the memory of the millions who died. Sure we had a military that was second to none, and armed population, and military training for everyone, but how does a nation prepare for the living dead?" she shook her head and covered her chest, concealing an old Zepplien Hegemony uniform. She looked at the snow "I was 16 during the first outbreaks in Africa, they called it African Rabies right?" I nod to her, and realise something "You said 16, so that would make you 30 now." she looked closer to 40 or 50, and chuckled at me "I am indeed, unlike capital- heretics females of this nation wear our age like a badge of honor, with age comes wisdom after all. I know the years have not been kind to me, and that I look old for my age." she gestures to the city and askes "May I?" I nod and she says "I, like all my classmates, didn't care what happened to the capitalist dogs and was sure that Marx would intervene before the infected got to our boarder. We were so disinterested in it, all we cared about was classes, cute people, and watching hockey games, not too uncommon for any teen wouldn't you say?" she sighed and slouched slightly "You could imagine our surprise when we we got the speech from our High Admiral that Komyhiem ZSH was under attack by 'unknown hostiles, and that the Hegemony should prepare for war' we didn't do anything until, within the same hour our military force was mobilized and sent into Komyhiem in full force." I look slightly confused at her, not seeing the significance of that, and she explained "During the Great Patriotic War the Hegemony allowed the Germans to get 150 miles into the Hegemony before we could even order our forces to confront them, we never faced anything so powerful that it would cause all our admirals to get together like that." I nod for her to continue "Well the thing is that, we had a defeat waiting for our army, and we didn't even know it. That is a tale you ought to hear from a survivor though, I wasn't there. After that defeat there was panic, the government fled, and have you ever seen what happens to people when their government abandons them?" I nod and say "Yes, in the United St-" she cuts me off "What your 'great panic' or the fact you lost the entire east and west coasts, that is nothing. Unlike you we depended on our government for everything, food, water, housing, power, protection, and most of all orders. There were tales of farmers that continued to farm as the Zeds advanced because they were so confident in the government sending rescue." she mutters something under her breath and said "But I wasn't part of the government, you will have to ask them about it, me and my comrades were part of the defence of Atlantica, though the government left the admirals there were stubborn. We formed big battle lines, and were given the orders fire when the Zeps got in range, now there was a problem with that, in our weapons. The AK-47 is a design ranging back to the Great Patriotic War, but it is fully automatic, and our combat doctrine was to spray with it and hope we hit something, aiming was only used in city combat. So on one side we have a bunch of teens, and a hand full of Kirov class airships vs a multi million zombie army. I was the only unit from my school to get out. It was such a blood bath, the only way we got out is because some of the Kirovs dropped us rope, and we climbed. The sight of the city was bad, we had an armed population killing zombies in droves, but it wasn't enough." she sighed and asked "Have you ever seen what a Kirov class can do it a city?" I nod, remembering a video of their Kirov class carpet bombing a city, with only three airships, saying "Yeah, I have seen them drop hundreds of bombs before having to rearm." she nods "The idea was for the Kirovs to blast the streets of the Zombies funneled in, but the bombs were not discriminate, they demolished building, civilians, our own troops, and I don't know how it happened, but infected got on one, and it crash with its bombs still active. The fireball could be seen for miles." she shook her head and sat back, opening a bottle and offered "Vodka?" I shake my head no and she takes a big swig, then looks at her watch and informs me that it is time for mass and she must be off, however that she would meet me for a dinner later that week.
New Uru'baen, People's Republic of Gerelden
I sit across from Bianca Mukerji, the mastermind and eternal Premier of the PRG, People's Republic of Gerelden, who is a distinguished 32 year old head of state. She leans back and opens the envelope I handed her, I see a smile briefly cross her face as she removes a book with the words on the front 'The Manifesto of the Communist Party' laughing at me a little "What provoked you to bring this?" I smile at her a little and tell her "Well that is the actual book you were given during your time in the Hegemony." she looks over the book and thumbs through it carefully, recognising various notes she took. Then.carefully put it on her desk. She preceded to explain "Gerelden was never a sane nation by any standards, the first time I really saw that was when I was sent to the Hegemony. I loathed their system at first, a redistribution of wealth, to a rich girl that sounded like you were just going to steal my money. Until I realised how well their leaders lived, and suddenly realised that you can have one person so powerful that they have all the wealth of a nation to themselves. But I am blathering, let me get to my point, my point is this. I was in the easternmost part of Zepplien when the zombies hit, I was 18 at the time and serving on a boarder between Zepplien and Terintania. Sweet Violet that was impossible, have you ever seen what happened there? The entire population went north to try and escape the zombies. I remember specifically what our commander said 'Flamethrowers and nerve gas, that's how we will stop them." she shivers despite the warm office, she looks at a picture on her desk and shows me. It seems to be her and two members of the Zepplien Cyberwarfare unit. She then continues "That was Shane and Bala, Bala was dating some idiot who didn't have her gas mask on properly and suffocated, but she was the best damn hacker in the Hegemony. The Shane idiot was surprisingly trained as a pilot for their twin blade type Che gunships. However, and to this day I think they screwed up some paperwork, they assigned me to a Flamethrower Unit, how dare they, me, the stunningly beautiful and intelligent Bianca Mukerji. Gah that pisses me off to this day." she shakes her head and I look at her, wondering what this all has to do with zombies. She picks up what I'm thinking and said "Long story short I used my beauty to get both of them into bed with me. Then I 'persuaded' them to get us all back to my home nation. Bala was a submissive girl by nature, so that wasn't a problem, but Shane we had to hold a gun to." she looks at a map and says "The Che gunship couldn't get us all the way, we knew that, but we did have Japan to refuel in. So we set out, our naive teenage selves thinking Japan would just hand over part of their vital fuel supply. We were rudely awakened when we landed and were besieged by refugees while we refueled." she lets out a sigh and puts her head in her hand, not at all matching the profile of the ruthless dictator she was supposed to be when she said "My commander was right though, flamethrowers and nerve gas will stop anyone."
